Our village, once known as Sannathammanahalli, was under the jurisdiction of Mysore Deevan T.R.A. Thambuchetti, a nobleman who deeply respected the Christian community. During his time, this parish was under the care of St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral. Out of his devotion, the Deevan built a small mud church for Christian worship and generously granted the village to the community, which later became known as Thambuchettipalya. In 1911, Rev. Fr. Gabier constructed an additional small church, marking a new chapter in the parish’s history.
Our church is blessed with a very ancient ivory statue of St. Anthony of Padua, crafted in the saint’s birthplace Lisbon, Portugal. The statue was originally gifted by the Archbishop of Lisbon to a relative traveling to Goa, where it was kept for public veneration at St. Francis Xavier’s Church for over a century. Later, it was passed to Fr. Borges, who placed it in St. Anthony’s Church, Thambuchettipalya, on June 13, 1948. The old church, built by Fr. Lovis Mascarenhas in 1959, became a center of devotion. Since the installation of the statue, countless devotees irrespective of religion visit the shrine, especially on Tuesdays, the day dedicated to St. Anthony. In 1988, Rev. Fr. I. Chinnappa renovated the church, and in 1996, Rev. Fr. A.S. Anthonyswamy built the Miracle Park, featuring a 25-foot, 22-ton statue of St. Anthony along with 14 beautifully designed Stations of the Cross.
As the Catholic faith continued to grow, the 1959 church became too small to accommodate the increasing number of parishioners. In 2007, Rev. Fr. T. Bernard laid the foundation for a new and larger church, later completed by Rev. Fr. Mariyappa Gregory, Parish Priest and Dean of T.C. Palya Deanery. The new shrine was dedicated to the glory of God and inaugurated by Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras on November 1, 2009. A relic of St. Anthony brought from Padua was also installed and blessed on August 9, 2010. Today, people of all faiths from all over Karnataka visit the church in harmony, especially on Tuesdays, to seek the saint’s blessings. The church proudly stands under the Archdiocese of Bangalore, continuing to be a beacon of faith, unity, and peace.
